Seattle Storm – Horns Read

Dan Hughes, coach of the Seattle Storm, used this horns set into a double screen to get a layup in the 2020 WNBA playoffs. This is an excellent example of the offense making the defense wrong. Here, Jewell Loyd saw her defender begin to chase over the double screen so she burned them, rejected the screen and finished at the rim. Coaches should be more concerned with helping their players to read the defense and make the correct decision than getting them to perfectly execute offensive action. Loyd didn’t use the double screen as it was intended, which could be deemed “poor execution”, but she read her defense, made them wrong and scored.
