Knowledge for Coaches

  • Pressing allows you to control the tempo and force turnovers.
  • There will always be a time in the game where you may need to press due to time and score.
  • Play through the lines – stop a sideline dribble with a foot outside of the line.
  • The on ball defender should be square to the ball until it gets to one side of the floor – then he should cut the floor and not let the ball back to the middle.
  • The backside defender should be as far from his man as he can be and if the ball is thrown to his man, he must closeout on the catch.
  • Off ball defenders must always be ready to rotate over to stop the ball.
  • In the 2-2-1, the front men pressure the ball and send the ball handler up the sideline where it will be double teamed near half court.
  • In the run and jump, the defender coming to jump the ball must yell “Blitz” so his teammate knows he is coming to make a play.
